Our Insider's Guide to Ambergris Caye Island

We usually find that the first thing guests do after landing is take a long, deep breath of the salty air. It's the official signal that you've finally made it to Ambergris Caye Island, and life's about to move much slower. We've put this guide together to help you navigate the island like we do — skipping the tourist traps and heading straight for the quiet reefs. Consider this your personal map to the moments that redefine what a getaway should feel like.

Why We Love Ambergris Caye Island

The appeal of this island goes far beyond the postcard views. We appreciate the way the environment shifts through the seasons and the specific preparations that make your stay effortless. These details help you settle into the island's tropical rhythm from the moment you arrive.

Weather and the Best Time to Visit

Dry season peaks between February and April, and temperatures fluctuate. April often sees highs of 88°F and only 4 days of rain — the ideal time for those wanting endless sun. If you prefer a cooler, softer breeze, January and December are more comfortable with highs in the upper 70s. The "green season" brings more frequent rain, but these are often quick tropical showers that clear the air and keep the island vibrant and lush.

Packing for Paradise

Belize follows a "barefoot casual" dress code. Since temperatures rarely dip below 70°F even at night, we recommend light linen layers and breathable fabrics. During the winter months, an occasional cold front can roll through, bringing cooler breezes — especially in the evenings. It’s a good idea to pack a light jacket or sweater just in case. You’ll need a wide-brimmed hat and polarized sunglasses to cut the glare on the water. Remember to pack reef-safe sunscreen to protect your skin and the delicate coral ecosystem.

The North Island Advantage

Staying 6.5 miles north of San Pedro provides a refined, peaceful atmosphere. The air is clearer, the stars are brighter, and the only noise is the sound of the waves crashing on the reef. You get the privacy of a secluded retreat with the ability to venture into the bustle whenever you choose.

Snorkeling and Diving the Belize Barrier Reef

The Belize Barrier Reef is the second-largest in the world and serves as our front yard. Most of our guests spend a full or half day submerged in this tranquil world where the true magic happens just beneath the surface.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley

Hol Chan Marine Reserve is known for its vibrant coral and diverse marine life. You'll swim alongside sea turtles, tropical fish, and docile nurse sharks. Shark Ray Alley provides a unique chance to get up close with nurse sharks and southern stingrays.

Mexico Rocks

Mexico Rocks is both our favorite and a guest favorite for snorkeling, especially for those who enjoy calm, shallow waters. The reef is alive with sea fans and vibrant corals, creating an easy, beautiful place to explore. It’s also quieter than the more well-known southern sites, and conveniently located just off the front of the hotel. With only a short walk down the beach to the dive shop, getting out on the water couldn’t be easier. Keep an eye out for dolphins, sharks, turtles, eels, and a wide variety of colorful tropical fish.

The Great Blue Hole

Advanced divers often head to the massive underwater sinkhole, known as the Great Blue Hole. It's home to ancient geological formations and various shark species. We can recommend reputable dive shops to ensure safety remains top priority for this full-day excursion.

Kayaking, Paddleboarding, and Coastal Cruising

We offer complimentary kayaks and stand-up paddleboards for you to enjoy. On calm days, the water becomes glassy and serene — perfect for exploring the crystal-clear Caribbean Sea. Paddle out toward the reef or cruise along the coastline for a peaceful, up-close view of the island from a whole new perspective.

Sunset Sailing and Catamaran Tours

Set out on the water aboard a catamaran — whether sailing or motorized — for a fun-filled day of snorkeling and soaking up the Caribbean. Or unwind on a sunset cruise, where you can watch the sky light up as the sun dips below the horizon, all while enjoying tropical drinks and light bites.

Our Favorite Beaches Around Ambergris Caye Island

The island's coastline changes depending on where you stand. Many areas have shallow, clear water that's knee-deep for a long walk out.

These are our favorite beach spots:

  • Secret Beach: This paradise on the western side has crystal-clear waters and a collection of bars where tables and chairs sit right in the shallow sea.

  • Our Private Beach at Mangata Villas: Our shoreline offers lounge chairs, daybeds, and hammocks for the ultimate in relaxation without the foot traffic of town.

  • Northern Ambergris Caye: Head north of Mangata Villas and take a scenic drive — up to 9 miles — along the coastline, stopping at any beach that catches your eye along the way. It’s one of our favorite ways to explore the island.

Exploring San Pedro Town Like a Local

San Pedro Town is the heartbeat of the island, full of narrow streets and Caribbean colors. We suggest heading into town to experience the local rhythms and authentic flavors.

Navigating via Golf Cart

Golf carts are the primary mode of transportation on the island, and we highly recommend renting one to explore at your own pace. It’s the easiest and most fun way to get around. Taxis are also readily available if you prefer not to drive. We’re happy to recommend a reputable rental company to get you started.

Dining and Belizean Cuisine

Belizean flavors blend Caribbean, Mayan, and Mestizo influences. Local food tours in San Pedro provide a great introduction to street food, where you'll sample rice and beans, stewed chicken, and fresh ceviche.

Shops, Art, and Island Culture

Local artisans and boutiques line Front Street. The Belize Chocolate Company is a guest-favorite stop for Belizean-made treats. Additionally, you'll often find local woodcarvers working on Ziricote or Mahogany pieces near Central Park.

Day Trips From Ambergris Caye Island

For a change of scenery, hop over to the charming nearby island of Caye Caulker, or venture inland for a full-day adventure exploring the lush jungles of mainland Belize.

Caye Caulker

The “Go Slow” motto perfectly captures the laid-back spirit of our neighboring island. The Split is the most popular place to swim, with its narrow channel of clear, refreshing water. Hop on a quick 30-minute water taxi or join a guided tour to explore the colorful main street and enjoy fresh lobster during the season.

Mainland Adventures

The mainland offers a look at the country's rich Mayan heritage. Sites like the Lamanai Archaeological Reserve allow you to climb ancient pyramids after a scenic river boat ride. Cave tubing is another guest-favorite where you'll float through underground river systems while guides explain their significance to the Maya.

Unique Outdoor Activities We Recommend

We believe the best memories happen when you step off the beaten path.

These activities offer a deeper look at the island's natural rhythms:

  • Mainland Jungle ATV Tours: Take a short flight to the mainland for a rugged trek through the tropical canopy. You’ll navigate limestone trails and hidden mud tracks while seeing the wilder side of the Belizean jungle.

  • Reef Fishing and Beach BBQ: A "Fish and Cook" tour lets you catch your own meal and watch your guide prepare fresh ceviche and create a delicious lunch over an open fire on the beach.

  • Bird Watching on the West Side: The lagoons behind the island are home to Roseate Spoonbills and Great Blue Herons.

Relaxing Island Moments

Adventure is a huge part of the Belizean experience, but we believe in balancing it with total stillness. These moments allow you to reset and recharge without a schedule.

In-Villa Wellness

We can arrange for professional massage therapists to visit your villa or casita for a treatment in your room. Or, enjoy your massage on the beach. The sound of the waves provides a natural soundtrack that no spa recording can match.

Star-Gazing on the North Side

Light pollution is minimal beyond the 5-mile mark. The beach at Mangata Villas offers a front-row seat to the Milky Way on clear nights. It's the perfect way to end a quiet evening before retreating to your room.

Spend an Afternoon at Moon Bar

Moon Bar sits as the ultimate recreation destination on the north side. It's a beautiful setting with pool access and award-winning lobster pizza. Guests enjoy the adults-only atmosphere and our golf cart drive-in movie nights under the palms.

When you book with us, we help shape the rest of your stay. Reef excursions, day trips, golf carts — all handled before you arrive, so nothing feels rushed once you're here.
